Every fabricated metal component, regardless of how complex it appears in the finished installation, is produced through some combination of these three types. CNC laser cutting uses a focused laser beam to cut metal sheet with significantly better edge quality and tighter tolerances than plasma. The cut edge of a laser-cut stainless steel component requires no secondary finishing — it is clean enough to be visible in the finished installation. Consequently, laser cutting is the specified process for signage components, decorative architectural elements, and retail fabrication applications where the cut edge forms part of the finished visual.


Waterjet cutting uses a high-pressure water and abrasive mixture to cut through materials that cannot tolerate the heat generated by plasma or laser. It handles thick stainless steel grades where heat-affected zones would compromise the surface finish, as well as composite materials and non-metallic substrates that appear in mixed-material retail fabrication projects.


The cutting process chosen for any component depends on the material, the required edge quality, the thickness, and the level of detail in the design. Getting this decision right at the specification stage avoids secondary finishing work that adds cost and time.


Type 2 — Forming

Once metal is cut to size, forming shapes it into three-dimensional components. Flat sheet metal becomes a counter top, a letter form, a bracket, or a structural frame through forming processes that apply controlled force to bend, roll, or press the material into the required shape.


Press brake bending is the most widely used forming process in Dubai's commercial fabrication sector. A press brake applies force along a straight line to bend sheet metal at a precise angle. Reception counter returns, display unit sides, shopfront frame sections, and channel letter returns — all produced through press brake bending.


The quality of press brake work is visible in the finished installation. Consistent bend angles, tight corner radii, and accurate dimensions across multiple identical components indicate quality forming work. Inconsistent bending — uneven angles or dimensions that vary between components — creates fitting problems at the installation stage that are expensive to resolve on site.


Roll forming bends sheet metal progressively through a series of rollers to produce curved profiles — cylindrical columns, curved counter fronts, and radius details that press brake bending cannot achieve. In Dubai's retail fabrication environment, roll-formed curved metalwork appears in premium retail counter designs and architectural feature elements.


Metal spinning forms sheet metal into symmetrical circular shapes around a mandrel. Less common than bending and rolling in commercial retail fabrication, but used for decorative elements, lighting components, and feature pieces in hospitality and high-end retail environments.


Type 3 — Joining

Cutting produces the individual components. Forming shapes them. Joining assembles them into the finished fabricated structure. In metal fabrication in Dubai's commercial sector, welding is the primary joining process — with mechanical fastening used where welding is not appropriate or accessible.


MIG welding is the standard production welding process for structural and commercial fabrication. Fast, versatile, and capable of handling a wide range of metal types and thicknesses. MIG welding joins the structural frames, brackets, and assemblies that form the backbone of retail fabrication projects — the elements that carry the load and hold the visible components in position.


TIG welding produces significantly higher quality welds with finer control over the heat input and the weld bead. The result — when ground and polished correctly — is essentially invisible in the finished surface. Consequently, TIG welding is the specified joining process for stainless steel signage components, visible counter joins, and any retail fabrication application where the weld will be seen in the finished installation.


A quality TIG weld on a stainless steel reception counter, ground flush and brushed to match the surrounding surface, disappears entirely. A MIG weld in the same position — even a technically good one — is visible. The choice of welding process is therefore a specification decision with direct visual consequences, not merely a production choice.


Mechanical fastening — bolts, rivets, and structural fixings — is used where welded joins are not accessible, where components need to be disassembled, or where the substrate is not weldable. In retail fabrication, mechanical fastening typically appears in modular display systems, removable panel systems, and installation fixing details that connect fabricated components to building substrates.
